THE BRIEF, THE BUILD, THE PAYOFF.
The Steve Nash Foundation Showdown brought world-class football names, basketball stars and New York’s next generation of players together on a small-sided street pitch in Manhattan.
For Gregory van der Wiel, the brief was simple: capture the day from inside the action and turn it into a recap that felt personal, immediate and true to the energy of the event.
Rather than covering the event from the sidelines, the camera stayed close to Gregory throughout the experience — arrivals, conversations, players reconnecting, match action and the moments happening between plays.
With names like Didier Drogba, Roberto Baggio and Edgar Davids sharing the pitch, the challenge was capturing recognizable personalities without losing the raw, neighborhood feel that makes Showdown different from a traditional stadium event.
The final film was built as a concise social recap — quick enough to match the pace of the game, but loose enough to leave room for personality, reactions and the atmosphere around the pitch.
The result was less of a conventional sports highlight and more of a first-person record of Gregory’s day at Showdown.

Love it bro, looks amazing. Looking forward to more work!
